Eco-conscious Hedonism at Wonderfruit Festival 2019 with Katrina Razon

Thailand’s globally conscious eco-fest Wonderfruit is back for another year this 12-16 December. With sustainability built into its very core, this family friendly (children under 12 are free, a 4-day dog pass costs THB 800; must be accompanied by an adult) celebration of art, music, food and everything is Pattaya’s most exciting event of the year.

We caught up with Katrina Razon to talk festivities.

Wonderfruit is celebrating its 6th instalment this year. What’s different this time around?

Asides from more camps and stages onsite, we are implementing more sustainable practices. This year, we have removed all single-use cups, which means everyone will have to bring a refill cup or purchase one of our Wonderfruit cups for their beverages of choice. It’s our next step to reducing waste.

What are you most excited about at this year’s festival?

At Wonderfruit, there is something happening in every corner at every hour. I am looking forward to the diversity of our program and I think many Wonderers will be surprised by the vast amount of activities we curated this year. Wonderfruit has also become somewhat of an annual reunion for many people including myself. It’s always a joy to be around family and friends throughout the event. And I’m personally very excited to have Four Tet on the bill. We have worked together previously, and I invited him to play at Wonderfruit. He’s one of my musical heroes so this is a dream.

How do you plan your festival wardrobe?

Every year, I collaborate with independent designers who embrace ethical-production and slow fashion. It aligns with our ethos. I always wear a handmade crown by Colombian designer Magnetic Midnight – it has become my signature on the Fields.

Any fashion tips for first-timers?

I would recommend coming in outrageous fancy dress, as long as it’s not culturally insensitive. Use your outfit choice as a way to express your creativity – have fun! It is, however, important to always choose comfort since you are on your feet covering great distance throughout the event.

What’s in your festival bag? Any must-bring items?

A reusable cup, reusable water bottle to keep hydrated, cordyceps adaptogenic mushrooms to optimise energy, mosquito repellent, a hand-towel, a fan, a pocket charger, and sunscreen.

You recently posted about #FestivalEtiquette on your IG stories. Would you care to elaborate?

Festival and event producers undergo an extremely stressful time when curating a show. I think more people need to practice empathy when communicating with festival producers as many people can be disrespectful of their time. Please bear in mind that producers work for a whole entire year to make an event that is truly memorable. Be kind to the show runners – it’s never an easy job.

Where are you headed post-festival?

I will be heading to Phuket to decompress after the festival.

What other projects are you working on besides Wonderfruit?

I am working on KSR Ventures, an investment firm which I founded and on CC:Concepts – a live events company where I serve as Creative Director in the Philippines.

See you there?
