How to look like a Chanel girl at the beach

Last week, Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld turned the Chanel SS19 runway show into a magical beach escape inside the Grand Palais, complete with waves, white sands and a seagull backdrop. Guests were suitably stunned (look out for Pharrell’s split-second ‘wow’ in the video below).

What do Chanel girls wear to the beach? Breezy tweed suits, layers of pearls, and the cutest straw visors, of course. But even better than the sunshiney fashion – and attainable right now, whether for work, the weekend or your upcoming island getaway – was the makeup, designed by virtuoso Lucia Pica, global head of makeup at Chanel. The models wore a bright raspberry-rose lip, flushed cheeks and a glossy, silvery lid – a look that was fun but low-maintenance, perfect for your next beach trip.

‘Karl Lagerfeld’s girls always look strong and beautiful at the same time,’ said Lucia Pica. ‘The lip colour’s inspiration came from one of the bags in the collection. So I perfectly matched with it to Rouge Allure Velvet in Infrarose ( coming out in the 2019 Spring-Summer make-up collection). I wanted a strong poppy fresh colour with a matte finish to give it a feeling of blurriness. I applied the lipstick from the bullet, then to intensify the matte effect and give a blurry look, I applied Poudre Universelle Libre on the top and then the lipstick over again: multi-layering for a velvety effect.’

Use a sheer wash of silver or gold on the lids and top with a balm for a glossy effect, then tap a touch of balm over your chosen blush to get that same glowy gloss on the cheeks. Finish with layers and layers of mascara on your top and bottom lashes – the clumpier the better!

If you want to recreate the look using the exact products, the Chanel L’Art du Détail Spring Summer 2019 makeup collection will be available from January 2019. In the meantime, see you at the beach – we’ll be the ones in pink lipstick.
