Phuket behaves like several islands at once. Patong is loud and makes no apology for it, yet a twenty-minute drive brings you to quiet coves, clifftop villas and serene coastlines such as Natai. It suits travellers who like to keep their options open and want a bounty of choice.
Koh Samui, by contrast, moves at a slower tempo, but it is not short on buzz. Koh Samui takes a little more effort to reach, but that can work in its favour. Either way, the island’s airport is a small, open-air affair set among tropical gardens: you walk from the plane through greenery rather than down a jet bridge, so the holiday starts right there.

Phuket’s strength is its variety. The west coast alone delivers a run of postcard sunsets, and the island functions as a departure lounge for the rest of the Andaman — Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi, the Similans, all a short ride away. Whatever the day calls for, there’s usually a version of it close by, and a boat leaving for somewhere else if there isn’t.

The Timing: Phuket vs Koh Samui
Thailand is a year-round tropical destination, but two islands keep entirely separate calendars.
Phuket is dry and sunny from November to April, then sees monsoon rain from May to October, the heaviest in September. Koh Samui runs on the opposite schedule: it stays bright through Phuket’s wet months and only turns rainy towards the end of the year, from October to December.
So, whenever you want to travel, one of the two islands is in its dry season, which makes it possible to hit both islands when they’re at their sunniest in a single year.

Choose Phuket if you want more options: it has more flights (even direct international routes), a long list of restaurants and bars, more options for day trips out to sea and other activities.
Choose Koh Samui for the reverse. If you want a smaller island, a slower week, and prefer to escape decision fatigue, this is the better pick.
