Last-minute getaways for your mum this Mother’s Day

Our mums are absolute champions. They hold our families together, deal with all our nonsense, take care of everyone, and provide lots of love (even if it sometimes comes out wrong) and free babysitting. Mother’s Day, the one day a year when your mum has to be spoiled, is nearly here (it’s Sunday if you’ve forgotten).

So, for all of you who’ve forgotten all about the holiday, we’ve put together a list of last-minute getaways for you and your mum. Even better, these will make it look like you’ve been super on top of your Mother’s Day planning.

For the mum who wants a more authentic experience

Stay at: Umah Tenang, Seseh, Bali

Set into a traditional Balinese village and nestled between two temples, Umah Tenang is ideal for the mum who wants an authentic holiday. And if she’s up early enough, she can watch the local fisherman bring in their catch each day.

Plus, Umah Tenang means ‘quiet home’ in Indonesian, so you know that it makes a great relaxing stay. The villa comes with four bedrooms, living spaces spread across two floors, and a 20-metre swimming pool, meaning it has plenty of space if she wants to spend time with the whole family for Mother’s Day.

For the mum who loves the finer things

Stay at: Villa Sound of the Sea, Canggu, Bali

Villa Sound of the Sea is all about the high-life. Conceived to be a boutique hotel, it comes with six seriously luxurious bedrooms spread between 2 sprawling bungalows (for tons of privacy), linked together by a 100-square-metre open-concept living room.

It also happens to be beachfront, with a 20-metre swimming pool, heated jacuzzi, and tons of water features and outdoor living spaces. Sound of the Sea is also part of the Pantai Lima Estate which means it has access to a tennis court and gym – perfect for the country club mother!

For the mum who wants some beachside pampering

Stay at: Baan Chang, Lipa Noi, Koh Samui

If you’re going to treat your mum like a queen, book her a stay at Baan Chang. The villa is all about creating a retreat fit for royalty – in fact, its name, “Chang”, means “elephant” in Thai, an animal synonymous with the royal family.

With an atmosphere of royal antiquity, Baan Chang features high ceilings, an abundance of natural textures, soft and hanging Thai silk, and expansive French windows that take in the ocean views. The living areas are spread across several pavilions housing dining areas, bedrooms and the main lounge area. It also has some of the most beautiful bathtubs we’ve ever seen! The main pavilions open out onto a 20-metre swimming pool that seemingly spills out into the ocean.

For the mum who loves being with everyone

Stay at: Ban SaireeLaem Sor, Koh Samui

If your mum is the kind of lady who loves being surrounded by her family, chip in and spread the love at Ban Sairee. Sprawled across three acres, the property features nine bedrooms and bathrooms, two teakwood pavilions and two separate rice barns.

Oh, and then there is the tennis court, extensive gardens for any kids to run amok, 20-metre swimming pool, a massage sala, yoga area beneath one of the barns, beach volleyball court, four kayaks, a trampoline, and private chef. You get the idea, right? Everything you could need for a big family on Mother’s Day is here.

For the mum who would kill for some peace and quiet (and indulgence)

Stay at: Iniala Beach HousePhang Nga, Phuket

So fabulous and so private that the Kardashians have stayed here, Iniala is the ultimate in the luxe lifestyle. All guests are given a round the clock team of personal staff. The staff includes a driver, butler, chef, spa therapist and housekeeper. Plus, you’ll get sumptuous dining, gorgeous lap pools, views that make you sigh, and service to match.

And, if for some reason young children need to come with your mum, they can stay in a separate hotel within the same resort. Yes, that’s right, a different hotel. That’s not to say they’ll be unsupervised though, as a nanny is provided to watch them for free.

For the mum in need of tropical paradise

Stay at: The Surin Phuket, Surin, Phuket

An exclusive beach resort, set into a carefully conserved landscape, The Surin Phuket is frequently recognised for having one of the best private beaches in Phuket. Beyond its white sands, minimal crowds, and impossibly clear turquoise water, there’s the added bonus that the resort has its own coral reef!

The Surin offers 103 hillside and beachfront cottages from where your mum can enjoy a beautiful tropical paradise. And this paradise comes complete with a rejuvenating spa, and sunset cocktails at the beach bar. If mum is a bit sportier, she can try out catamaran sailing, windsurfing, snorkelling and paddle boarding!

Where will you be taking your mum this Mother’s Day?

Our predictably unpredictable adventure nomad, Elisabeth is the yogi who wants it fast, the ultra-runner who prefers taking a hike, and the swimmer with a fear of lap pools. A consummate lover of all things outdoors, she’s on a perpetual quest to get those around her outside and moving.
