While the northern hemisphere reaches for its thermals, the sea stays a swimmable 28°C in Bali and Koh Samui. These are the beaches — and villas — that make your winter sun holiday come to life.
There’s a version of December that begins by putting three layers on before heading outside and scraping ice off a windscreen before dawn. This isn’t a guide to that one. The tropics keep their warmth through the northern winter, and the trick is knowing which stretches of sand stay calm and swimmable this time of year. Two islands manage it particularly well, we’ll let you in so you can bring that dreamy winter sun holiday to life.
BALI
December is a good time to catch Bali on gentler terms. The island is at its greenest and noticeably less busy than the August peak, which means it’s easier to snag a restaurant reservation, and you get better value for that villa booking. Days stay warm throughout, and the beaches below are the ones that look their best this time of year.
Sanur Beach
Sanur has an offshore reef that does the heavy lifting, breaking the swell well before it reaches the shore. That leaves a flat, shallow lagoon that stays swimmable right through the season, tides permitting. It is also the calmer, older side of the island, which is a selling point if you prefer to strolling the shores in peace without the buzz of too many beach clubs.
Where to stay: Manu Villas
Manu Villas is a newly opened two-villa estate and a short walk from the sand. Book the pair and you have seven bedrooms plus two bunk rooms, enough to house a large family without anyone drawing the short straw on sleeping arrangements.
Both villas come with a gym and an ice bath, and the larger Manu Gede adds an infrared sauna and a swim-up bar with sunken seats. The pools have a shallow end for smaller guests, which frees the adults to get on with the important business of doing very little.

Melasti Beach, Ungasan
Down on the Bukit Peninsula, Melasti holds onto its clear water and pale sand through December, which is a large part of why the cliffs above it keep filling with beach clubs. That means you are never far from a day bed and a wine list (or a spritz, if you prefer). The beach itself is a switchback drive or a lift ride down.
Where to stay: Cloud Nine Ungasan
A five-bedroom clifftop villa about ten minutes from Melasti. The wellness floor alone runs to a sauna, a cold plunge and a massage room, while a 20m pool and a private chef handle the rest of the day. The top-floor suite has its own balcony and outdoor hot tub, so claim it before anyone else unpacks. It sleeps 10 guests, and opens up for a celebration of 50 if December calls for one.

Amed Beach
Over on the east coast, Amed trades powder sand for volcanic black and offers some of the best snorkelling in Bali, with reefs and a well-known wreck sitting just off the shore. It falls outside our villa areas, so treat it as a day trip.
KOH SAMUI
By late December, Koh Samui is warm and bright and easing into its best run of the year. The Gulf-side beaches stay gentle and swimmable, which is exactly what you want for the holidays in the water.
Lipa Noi Beach
On the west coast, Lipa Noi is made for quieter days: soft powder sand and shallow water, far enough from the busy north to feel its exclusivity. It is a sunset beach, so perfect for watching the remains of the day in style. It’s a beach good for anyone whose idea of an itinerary is deciding between the pool and the sea.
Where to stay: Baan Kilee
An eight-bedroom villa with 30m of beach to itself on one of Samui’s rare year-round swimming spots. The 22m infinity pool has a swim-up bar, and for when the sun clocks off there are two cinemas, one indoor and one out. It looks straight at the Five Islands, which makes the west coast sunsets its party trick. Room for 16 guests means it takes a big group or a wedding in its stride.

Bophut Beach
Bophut Beach is clean and calm, with barely a large wave to speak of for most of the year thanks to its sheltered position. It is also central, with Fisherman’s Village and its restaurants and boutiques a short stroll away, so you get the beach and the evening plans in one postcode.
Where to stay: Panacea Retreat
A five-villa estate in the hills above Bophut with sea views from more or less every room. Taken in full it runs to 24 bedrooms across residences of four, five and six, which comfortably absorbs the sort of multi-family trip or celebration that would defeat a single house. It is gated and fully staffed, with the beach and Fisherman’s Village a short drive downhill.
