Getting Down And Dirty At Tokyo’s Pop-up Mud Bar, Gata

Cutting in half the time it takes females to get ready for a night out, guests at this  mud bar did not come dressed in designer. Gata Bar was a pop-up much like an onsen filled with mud, but not just any mud, mud shipped from the Ariake Sea.

There was sake and other drinks, food (probably sushi) and music. The pop-up was a brilliant marketing tactic for Saga, a prefecture in the south of Japan that specialises in mud baths.

The ‘bar’ was set up in the most apt of areas; the community space Commune 246 in the trendy and urban Aoyama. If you’re an avid traveller familiar with Tokyo, perhaps you’ve shopped for a bit around Aoyama, which is what it’s most famous for. Besides the ocean of hipsters.

Unlike Japan’s recent venture into naked dining, visitors got down and dirty with their clothes on. We think, without crossing the line into a sloppy-fest, this could be an interesting concept to adapt into other destinations. Would you step into a mud bath-bar?
